It seems like the Daily Friction tradition is weathering. But this is not going to be the case for long, new energy is going to produce new friction in the coming weeks. Check out Samsung’s e-paper prototype, get ready for the new Nexus One, play PlayStation games on the HTC HD2, Share Files and Printers between Windows 7 and XP, and much more in today’s edition of the Daily Friction.
Hardware
- Samsung shows off color e-paper prototype – Samsung has now unveiled a 10.1-inch color display It’s still very early days, with a measly 10:1 contrast ratio and the ability to display only 7% of the NTSC color gamut.
- Future Android UI Could Be Found in HTC Patent – HTC’s Sense UI is a big hit. Pretty much everyone who has played with it will agree that what HTC has done with the stock Android experience is something special. Before Android came about, they were the company responsible for making Windows Mobile look nice with Touch Flo and Touch Flo 3D. Inevitably, the question will arise “What’s next for HTC?†If recent patent filings are any indication, the next look of Android could resemble a virtual book with pages that turn.
- Just how free will the Nexus One be? As we now know, the Consumer Electronics Show will not be the only thing going on in the gadget world next week. Google is getting a jump on CES with a January 5, 2010, press conference where the company should unveil its Nexus One phone. Details on the HTC-made device remain sketchy–though we have seen some leaked specs–but most signs point toward T-Mobile as the carrier for the newest Google Android phone.
- HTC HD2 plays Tekken 3 using FPSECE emulator – Not much to say here other than there’s a PlayStation emulator for the HD2 and it bloody well works! The original gangster of consoles, already emulated on other WinMo devices such as Toshiba’s TG01, has made its way to HTC’s finest thanks to version 0.10 of the First PlayStation Emulator for Windows CE.
Information
- Share Files and Printers between Windows 7 and XP – If you have a home network and are running Windows 7 and have XP on other PC(s) you might want to share files between them. Here’s how.
- Russia ‘plans to stop asteroid’ – The head of Russia’s federal space agency has said it will work to divert an asteroid which will make several passes near the Earth from 2029. Anatoly Perminov told the Voice of Russia radio service that the agency’s science council would hold a closed meeting to discuss the issue. Any eventual plan is likely to be an international collaboration, he said. The US space agency said in October that there is a one-in-250,000 chance of Apophis hitting Earth in 2036. That announcement was a significant reduction in the probability of an impact, based on previous calculations that put the chances at about one-in-45,000. The asteroid is estimated to pass within about 30,000 km of the Earth in 2029.
- Adobe To Surpass Microsoft As Hacker Target – Adobe Reader and Flash will surpass Microsoft Office applications as favorite targets of cybercriminals, a security vendor predicted Tuesday. In unveiling its 2010 Threat Predictions report, McAfee said the growing popularity of the Adobe products has attracted the attention of cybercriminals, who have been increasingly targeting the applications. Adobe Reader and Flash are two of the most widely deployed applications in the world. As a result of Adobe’s success in client software, McAfee Labs believes “Adobe product exploitation will likely surpass that of Microsoft Office applications in 2010.”
